マッサワの戦い20周年に際しての駐日エリトリア大使館による声明

エリトリアの独立を目指す武装闘争は1961年に始まり、1991年に終わりました。

まるで不吉な亡霊のように、旧ソビエト連邦はダハラック諸島に原子力潜水艦を配備し、冷戦時代の旧ソ連海軍の核基地としました。ダハラック諸島は、東アフリカ・エリトリアのマッサワ港沖に位置します。エリトリア人民解放軍（EPLA）は1979年に戦略的撤退を行いました。この時期の旧ソ連の軍事的干渉は、火器の規模からしても、人員の面からしても、アフリカ大陸史上空前の規模のものでした。

それから12年後、1991年2月に、EPLAによるマッサワの戦略的奪回の後に、旧ソ連赤軍と海軍はダハラック諸島や周辺地域から混乱の中、撤退しました。

二十年間にわたりアフリカの角地域に対してじゅうたん爆撃を行ってきた旧ソ連の銃声は止み、静けさが訪れました。対話と和平、安定と協力への扉が開かれました。戦争、不安定、地域の分断への窓はこれを最後に閉じられました。

アフリカの角におけるベンチマークとして平和のアーカイブスから投票箱が平和裏に取り出されました。マッサワの戦いは、歴史、そして歴史の公印となりました。超大国は、歴史にまだ新しい東アフリカでの敗北の記憶に罰せられ、椅子に座りながら顔を曇らせたのです。

1990年のマッサワの戦いは、旧ソ連の重要性に変化を与え、私たちの愛するアフリカ大陸における奴隷制、植民地主義、従属の再生を滅ぼしました。この歴史的な出来事を偲ぶために、20年の後に、EPLAのアーカイブスから一般に公開されたマッサワの戦い（フェンキル作戦）の残響をお聞きになってください。

Statement issued 20 years later on the occasion of the Battle of Massawa by the Embassy of the State of Eritrea to Japan 

The armed struggle for the independence of Eritrea started in 1961 and ended in 1991.

Like a ghost of evil, USSR anchored its nuclear submarines establishing a strategic cold war nuclear naval post in an island called  Dahlak, off the coast of the Red Sea Port of Massawa, Eritrea, East Africa, heeding Eritrean Peoples Liberation Army’s (EPLA) gallant military strategic retreat carried in 1979.  USSR military intervention of the period was simply unprecedented both in fire power and men in the history of the continent.

12 years later, USSR’ Red Army and Navy retreated in disarray from Dahlak and its environs after EPLA’s organized gallant strategic comeback to Massawa of February 1991.

The sound of the guns from USSR which blanket bombed the Horn of Africa for two decades was once and for put into silence. The door for dialogue, peace, stability and cooperation was opened. The window for war, instability and division in the region was closed for good.

Ballot box was peacefully unwrapped from the archives of peace as a benchmark in the Horn of Africa. The Battle of Massawa became history and its official seal. The superpowers winced in their chairs amerced in past memory of defeat in East Africa still fresh in the annals of history.

The Battle of Massawa (1990) altered USSR’s gravity and abolished the re-birth of slavery, colonialism and subservience in our beloved African continent for good. Please listen to the echoes of the Battle of Massawa (Fenkel Operation), brought out twenty years later from the archives of EPLA to the public, to commemorate this historic event.
