[Japan Earthquake] Message from Eritrea Embassy in Tokyo

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am typing this message from a broken PC in my residence in Musashi Koyama,
Tokyo. Thank you for all your messages of concern, the embassy and all the staffs are alright.

I have been to many troubled spots in this planet in my life. I have witnessed one of the worst prisons on earth, the biggest battlefields that ever happened in Africa and the Middle East. Even though these events are man made and very different in nature to the March 11, 2011 earthquake in Japan, I believe, they all have one thing in common and i.e. humanism.

Therefore, please allow me to express, at this particular moment, my heartfelt sympathy to all Japanese and other nationals affected by this unfortunate disaster. I have to say, loud and clear, that I have witnessed in this sad moment the unparallelled resilience and patience of the Japanese people. I simply can't compare these dignified, patient, courageous humanity, humanism and an appropriate and scientific disaster management to any other that I ever witnessed in the past.
Dear friends and collegues, my thoughts and sympathies are with you and the Government of Japan during this difficult moment. Humanity has a lot to learn from the lessons of the Japanese.

親愛なる友人、同僚のみなさま

私はいまこのメッセージを、東京・武蔵小山の公邸の壊れたパソコンから書いています。
たくさんのお気遣いのメッセージをいただき、ありがとうございました。お陰さまで大使館とスタッフはみな無事でおります。
私はいままでの人生において、多くの争乱の地に身をおいてきました。地球上で最悪の刑務所の一つも体験しましたし、アフリカおよび中東の地域史上最大の戦場にも身を置きました。これらの出来事は人間が作り出したものという点で2011 年3 月11 日の日本 の地震とは異なりますが、たとえばヒューマニズムという点においては、これらの出来事は、共通の点を持っています。

それゆえに、この特別な瞬間にあたり、この不幸な災害に遭われたすべての日本の人々、 また外国籍の方々に、心からの哀悼の意を述べさせていただきたいと思います。そして、 私は声を大にしてはっきりと言わなくてはなりません、私はこの悲しい瞬間の最中にも、 日本の人々の空前の回復力と忍耐力を目にしました。過去に見てきたいかなるものとも、今回の日本の威厳のある、忍耐強い、勇気あるヒューマニズムや、科学的で適切な災害危機管理は、比べるべくもないものです。
親愛なる友人や同僚のみなさん、今回の困難な事態に際してみなさまと日本政府の心痛を心よりお察し申し上げます。人類は日本人の教訓から学ぶべき事が多くあるでしょう。
